HEERF III

The University of Iowa has received additional funds through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) to distribute to students who are enrolled during the fall 2021 semester and have exceptional financial need.

Eligibility Requirements for HEERF III

U.S. citizens and FAFSA eligible non-citizens:

  • You must have a valid 2021-2022 FAFSA
  • You must be enrolled in Fall 2021 classes
  • You must not have scholarships and grants that meet your full 2021-2022 cost of attendance
  • Undergraduate students must have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of $20,000 or less
  • Graduate and professional students must have an EFC of $5,846 or less and do not have a research or teaching assistantship of quarter-time or more
  • There is no HEERF application required; students who meet the above eligibility criteria will receive the grant.

International, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), undocumented, and other non-U.S. citizens:

  • You must submit an application to explain your financial need. The application will be available in October on MyUI
    • You may apply for funds to assist with any component of your cost of attendance or any emergency costs resulting from COVID-19

Additional Information

U.S. citizens and FAFSA eligible non-citizens who haven’t filed a 2021-2022 FAFSA should do so as soon as possible to be considered for HEERF III. If you have already submitted your 2021-2022 FAFSA, view your Financial Aid To Do List to see if any additional steps are needed for maximum HEERF consideration. Incomplete financial aid forms may prevent students from qualifying for HEERF III.

Students who have an EFC above the eligible range and have experienced a significant reduction in income (student or parent) since 2019 should contact the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Students who are eligible for HEERF III based on FAFSA information will receive an email in mid-September from the Office of Student Financial Aid with instructions for applying funds to their U-Bill, if they wish to do so.

HEERF III funds are limited and not guaranteed. Additional HEERF III funds will be distributed in a similar way in late March for the spring 2022 semester.
