The University of Iowa Office of Student Financial Aid has distributed the final awards through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) to students for the 2021-22 academic year.

Students with the highest financial need, as determined through the Free Application for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA) received priority and the largest awards. For spring 2022 HEERF awards, as for fall 2021 awards, domestic students who filed a FAFSA were eligible for consideration based on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). International, DACA, and undocumented students were eligible to submit an application through MyUI. 

Awards were made to the following groups with an average award of $1,183 per recipient. The average awards were $56 less than the fall awards.  

• 6,885 undergraduates received awards, totaling $8,354,110.
• 2,030 graduate and professional students received awards, totaling $2,221,719.
• 144 international, DACA, and undocumented students received awards, totaling $144,900.

Of the recipients, 34% of all awardees were first generation students, while 40% of the undergraduate awardees were first generation students. First generation students make up about 20% of the undergraduate class. 

Of the HEERF award recipients, 50% of undergraduates also received a Pell grant compared to 19% of the general undergraduate population. This demonstrates the university’s commitment to using these funds to support students with the highest need.
