This message was sent to UI students residing in the residence halls on Wednesday, March 18.
We are writing with an update regarding your housing and dining for Spring 2020.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate this quickly-evolving situation to mitigate the transmission of COVID-19. We recognize this may be a stressful situation for you and your family. University Housing and Dining is in constant communication with campus partners to ensure we are doing all we can to support our Hawkeyes while also keeping the community safe and healthy.
Because the University of Iowa will continue virtual instruction through the rest of the Spring 2020 semester, University Housing and Dining contracts will end Thursday, March 19, 2020. Please note: this does not mean you are expected to move your items out immediately. See more information below on move-out procedures.
We will remain open to only those students who have no alternative housing available to them.
Next Steps
Tell us your move-out plans by completing the Spring 2020 Move Out form as soon as possible but no later than Monday, March 23. This will enable us to provide support and care as needed and appropriate during this time.
Even if you are currently living on campus for Spring Break, you must complete the Spring 2020 Move Out form online with your plans to either move out or submit a new request to stay.
If you applied to stay on campus during the virtual instruction period, you must resubmit your request to remain in the residence halls. Please be aware that only those students who do not have a permanent residence or cannot return to their permanent residence will be permitted to remain on campus.
Move-Out Process
All residents will sign up for a two-hour window between March 19 and March 29 using the move-out form. Please wait until your designated time. Do not travel to campus until it is time for your designated move out. This will allow us to do two things: a) maintain appropriate social distancing, and b) control the flow of traffic around the hospital.
Express Checkout
When students arrive for their assigned move-out shift, they will complete an express checkout process as described below:
- Remove all belongings from your room.
- Lock your room door.
- Take your room key to your mailbox and place it in the Express Checkout envelope that will be in your mailbox labeled with your name.
- Deposit your room key in the return location, indicated by signs in the lobby.
- Return carts.
- Your room will be checked for damages after you check out. If there are damages you will receive that information by email.
Please do not come to check out of your room if you are sick, and consider bringing the fewest number of people possible to assist you with move out in order to maintain social distancing.
Meal Plans
Meal plans for students who are currently in the halls or are approved to remain in the halls will be available. Dining operations for students that must be on campus are limited to Burge Market Place, Clinton Street Market, and temporarily at Black’s Gold Grill. All will be serving to-go options.
Room and Board Credits
Students will be provided pro-rated adjustments to their university bill for housing and dining charges. More details regarding the specifics of these credits will be provided at a later time.

We kindly request that you keep calls to a minimum and email your concerns to housing@uiowa.edu. Thank you for understanding that some responses may not be sent until after April 1, specifically those related to room damages and refunds.
As a gentle reminder, students remaining in the residence halls are strongly encouraged to follow CDC guidance to practice social distancing in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Additional information regarding the university’s response to COVID-19 is available at coronavirus.uiowa.edu.
